Mullingar 1s traveled to Three Rock Rovers to face their Men’s 4’s team Saturday morning in what was the league opener. With Mullingar being relegated from Div 3 last season they would be eager to start their season with a win.
Mullingar started the game brightly with Marc Watters and Owen Wiltshire both coming close to getting the opener, but against the run of play Three rock got the opener after a lovely deflection. Their lead didn’t last though, Watters waiting on the attacking end line received a pass from Holger Marl, Watters drove into the D with the ball bouncing in front of him and smoothly dinked it over the diving Three Rock keeper making it 1-1 going in at half time.
The third quarter started at a fast paced with Mullingar doing most of the attacking. Mullingar took the lead after some brilliant passing play ending with Josh McCormack taking a shot where the Three Rock goalie made a good save but unfortunately for him the ball ended up at Holger Marls feet who slapped the ball past the grounded keeper. Mullingar got their third goal after a brilliant through ball from Adrian Quinn, Watters tipped the ball past the keeper which left McCormack with an easy open goal. Mullingar got their fourth and final goal when Watters played an aerial pass to Wiltshire and with no keeper in the goals Wiltshire cheekily brought the ball to the goal line and waited for Three Rock defenders to approach him before tapping the ball into the goals.
Mullingar Men’s next game will be away to Avoca 3’s Saturday the 7th of October in the Railway Cup.
